In the following story, explore where their character strengths were demonstrated and helped them to overcome challenges and difficulties.

Percy Julian
1899 - 1975
I was born in Montgomery, Alabama, during the Jim Crow era. My grandfather had been enslaved and had had two fingers cut off as punishment for learning to read and write. While slavery had been banned since 1865, there was still plenty of racism and discrimination.

At that time, Black students had to leave school after the 8th grade, when we were only 13 years old. I wanted to continue my education and was accepted into university – but I had to take high school classes in the evening to catch up.
