MAP stands for Mental Arithmetic Practice - a whole school
approach for mental mathematics. It is a flexible and
creative toolkit which redefines the teaching and learning of
mental mathematics in primary schools.
MAP has two key ‘missions’:
1. To equip teaching staff with the knowledge and
understanding of the most engaging and effective ways to
teach mental mathematics.
2. To give children a thorough and consistent approach to
calculating mentally, enabling them to choose and name the
most appropriate and efficient methods for any given
calculation.

What Experts Are Saying About MAP
“Dave and Anthony’s MAP programme has
pinpointed precisely what skills need to be taught, when, and how. With a variety of delivery methods designed to ‘stick’, I think this is too important to miss”
“MAP utilises the powerful tools of story, games, video and song to support the learning and teaching of mental mathematics..
The excellent, well-constructed and clear CPD training for teachers has had a hugely positive impact on the skills and knowledge of our teaching team equipping them to teach mental mathematics with increased confidence and enjoyment”
“The thing that really stood out for me was the clarity that you have brought to the list of efficient mental strategies pupils should be taught to draw .
The other factor that made MAP stand out for me was the element of fun …The characters, catchphrases and songs within MAP support children to embed the range of mental strategies available to them”

Maps are powerful tools!
✓ A map present information about the world in a simple, visual way
✓ We remember maps more easily than text because we register images faster in our brain
✓ Maps are symbolic depictions emphasising relationships
✓ Maps enable us to plan routes from one place to another
