In the following story, explore where their character strengths were demonstrated and helped them to overcome challenges and difficulties.

Confucius
551BCE - 479BCE
My father died when I was just three years old. Although he was from a noble warrior family, he left little money, leaving my mother to raise me in Qufu, Shandong Province, China. We were very poor, and I was often hungry. The winters were so cold and trying to survive was a struggle.

We may not have had much, but my mother made sure to educate me. To bring in some money, I worked as a shepherd and also looked after cows for a local farmer. It gave me time to reflect. What was a good life? How should it be lived? What was fair and unfair? How should people live together? I felt we should treat other people who we want to be treated, and we should forgive those who hurt us. These reflections were important to me. These questions became very important to me.
