Coco Chanel

1883 - 1971

My name is Coco Chanel, but when I was born in France in 1883, my parents called me Gabrielle. I grew up in a poor family, and when I was 12, my mother died. My father could not take care of me, so I was sent to live in an orphanage. It was a strict place, but the kind nuns there taught me how to sew. I didn’t know it then, but this skill would change my life.

When I was 18, I left the orphanage and got a job in a hat shop. I loved designing hats, and I was good at it. I also sang in cafés, where people called me “Coco”. I liked the name, so I kept it.
