In the following story, explore where their character strengths were demonstrated and helped them to overcome challenges and difficulties.

Louis Armstrong
1901 - 1971
My name is Louis Armstrong. I was born in 1901 in New Orleans, the grandson of slaves. Life was tough, and as a young boy, I had no proper home. But then the Karnofskys, a Russian Jewish family, took me in. Their kindness meant everything to me, and to show my gratitude, I wore a Star of David for the rest of my life.

New Orleans was full of music, but it was also a rough place. I often got into trouble and was once sent to live at the New Orleans Home for Colored Waifs. But that turned out to be a blessing—I learned to play the cornet and became the leader of the Home’s brass band.
