Harriet Tubman

1822 – 1910

My name is Harriet Tubman. I was born in 1820 in Maryland, America. Back then, I was called Araminta, or “Minty” for short, but later I chose my mother’s name, Harriet.

My family and I were slaves, owned by others. We belonged to the Brodess family, who made us work very hard. Life was unfair. When I was six, I worked as a nursemaid, and by the time I was 11, I was sent to work on the plantation. If we didn’t work fast enough, the master would hurt us.
