Welcome to EuHu’s new SEND Hub and the beginning of a work-in-progress.
In building this part of our platform, we have been speaking to as many teachers as possible to try to understand some of the areas of most concern to you.
And of course, there are so many – a lack of resources, money, time, and an ever-growing need for more help for our children and young people. Our admiration knows no bounds for the incredible job you do, often under almost impossible circumstances.
We know we cannot solve any of the problems but hope to provide support in whatever ways we can.
Areas of Need
The SEND Code of Practice (2015) sets out the range of needs children and young people might have in four broad areas:
Communication and
Interaction
Cognition and
Learning
Social Emotional and
Mental Health
Sensory and/or
Physical needs

For an easily digestible overview of these areas, teacher and SEND advisor, Jill Warburton, has written a helpful guide, which will be free to access here:
Help with specific difficulties
As well as the Code of Practice overview, we have written miniature guides to offer an outline of some of the most prevalent needs, as well as thoughts about useful resources and signposts to different types of support available.
The first 3 of these guides are available to read and/or download:
School Readiness
School readiness has been a topic raised and debated many times over the last few years, especially by educators in the Early Years, and of course this has a much wider impact than simply nursery and reception. Since the pandemic, many educators have reported a huge rise in children with extra needs as they begin their school journeys. Whether the onus should be on children to be “ready” or on schools to be more prepared to meet children where they are is another debate.

Practitioners at Sunflower Nursery share their thoughts…
We visited Sunflower Nursery in Manchester to speak to 3 passionate educators.
In these short video clips, they answer questions ranging from how transition works for them to the SEND needs of the little ones in their setting.
Katie, Early Years teacher
Have you noticed a difference in children's readiness for school
over the last few years?
Is it more usual for you to visit the schools your children will be
moving to, or do they come to you?
Dawn, Operations Manager
Do you have children at Sunflower with an EHCP?
What is the process for starting an EHCP?
Jayde, SENCO
How does transition work for children with SEND?

Teachers choose their favourite resources
Our sensory cushions really help our children with SEND with their listening, attention and focus when sitting on the carpet. They are light and easy to carry around - children take them to assembly, PE and around the school.
Music boxes, cause and effect toys, wind-up, Jack-in-a-box etc. Motivating, anticipation toys are really helping our children to make requests.
Dawn Gibbons
Puppets are fantastic resources. They can be used to help the children to open up. Using a diverse range of human puppets means a child can form an attachment to a particular child.

CPD
SEND CPD is something many teachers are crying out for and good CPD is likely to be in high demand for the foreseeable future.
Teachers tell us it needs to be practical, easily accessible and immediately helpful and give them the knowledge and confidence they need on a day-to-day basis.
We have partnered with Creative Education and the highly regarded Dr Pooky Knightsmith, to help support you and your SEND provision
