KS1 Year 1 Year 2 Art & Design What is Art? EuHu WOW Lesson

KS1 What is art?

In this Wow lesson you will be introduced to contemporary artists and understand how artists are inspired by all sorts of weird and wonderful things; Artists get ideas from around them and inside them!

KS1 What can we learn from a face?

In this Wow lesson you will be introduced to the work of a contemporary artist. You will understand how the artist uses vibrant colours, patterns and textures in her imaginary portraits. Using a foundational understanding of how to draw the proportions of the face, you will create your own collage of an imaginary portrait. You will also introduce themes of celebrating difference through these collages!

KS1 Can rubbish be art?

In this Wow lesson you will be introduced to the work of a contemporary artist who uses waste materials to create imaginative recycled sculptures.

The children will understand that sometimes artists use their work to deliver important messages and raise awareness of important issues.

Children will learn about the basic proportions of the human body and how to use 3D ‘junk’ or ‘rubbish’ materials and sculpting techniques, to create a sculpture of a figure. They will work collaboratively to help each other with joining materials.

LKS2 Do all great painters become artists?

In this Wow lesson you will be introduced to the abstract paintings of Hilma af Klint. Klint is now thought to be a forerunner of abstract paintings and predates Kandinsky and Mondrian in that style. You will use sketchbooks or planning papers to experiment with ideas. You will look at and gain inspiration from her use of bold colours and a mixture of organic and geometric shapes.

You will also learn how, although she was classically trained and talented in the art of landscape painting, portraiture and botanical painting, she had a long-term passion project of abstract paintings. Klint believed these paintings came ‘through’ not ‘from’ her.

LKS2 Is making art, art?

In this Wow lesson you will be introduced to the work of contemporary artist Shantell Martin who has a successful career creating a variety of outcomes in her unique style. The artist works mainly in black ink or spray paint, using mark-making, words and lines. Sometimes the works are large and cover whole walls in public spaces and rooms, installation pieces of art. Sometimes the artwork is used to enhance products such as trainers and clothes.

Sometimes the artist performs her drawings as part of the artwork, such as in music videos or live in front of an audience. Shantell Martin does not like to be pigeonholed but instead uses a variety of approaches to explore her own identity and ideas, without the limits of labels. Her work often asks the viewers questions about themselves.

LKS2 Is it better to be a designer or an artist?

In this Wow lesson the children will be introduced to the work of Egyptian-born and Canadian raised Karim Rashid (born 1960). Now living and working from New York, he is an award-winning designer.

His design work includes luxury goods, products, furniture, lighting, packaging, interiors and more. Children will understand how creativity and imagination are essential in many industries, not just for artists. They will try their hand at design, developing and experimenting with their own design style, like Karim.

UKS2 What makes art important?

In this Wow lesson the children will be introduced to the work of contemporary artist Lakwena Lakwena Maciver. Lakwena is a London-based artist, born in 1986. She has a mixed Ugandan and British heritage.

Lakwena paints murals and she has shown work in cities including London, Miami, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York and Vienna, both within gallery spaces and in the form of public art.

The children will use Lakwena’s style and journey as inspiration and create a poster for the school community, with bold patterns and a positive message.

UKS2 Why do dead artists matter?

In this WOW lesson the children will be introduced to Impressionism and the work of the impressionist artists. They will learn how this group of artists challenged the status quo at the time and developed a style of art that was considered radical.

The children will have a go at using lose brush marks like the impressionist artists did, and capturing movement and light like these artists tried to. Children will learn how certain inventions allowed these artists to innovate and create new ways of working, like outdoor painting rather than studio.

UKS2 Does my art matter?

In this WOW lesson, the children will look at examples of artists who have used themselves as their inspiration. The students will be invited to do the same and to make a piece of work in any medium and style, as long as it tells us something about them. This will be encouraging them to work ‘like real artists’ to express their own ideas and feelings.
